What gal doesn’t like to have her phalanges pampered and painted on a regular basis? Did you know that your beloved, signature nail color could be causing you harm?
Many of the leading nail color companies contain what’s referred to as the “Toxic Trio” of carcinogens in their products. This all came out as a big deal back in 2006 and some companies decided to change their ingredients. Others, however, have only changed their labels and still continue to use them!
What exactly ARE these ingredients and what are they doing in my polish?
- Formaldehyde-it’s used as a hardening agent
- Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) – adds flexibility and shine
- Toluene- helps your polish go on smoothly
So what’s the big deal?
- Formaldehyde– is a cancer causing preservative
- Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) – interferes with reproductive hormones and has been linked to developmental defects
- Toluene– is a neurotoxin and has been linked to developmental defects
In addition to being harmful to your health in general, this is extra bad news for anyone pregnant or trying to have a baby. Trace amounts of these minerals can be absorbed through your nails and skin. You are also inhaling the vapors every time to walk into the salon or paint your own nails at home.
What’s a gal to do?
Check your brand on this handy website to see how they add up on the “hazard scale” http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/. You type in a product and they give you a rating 1-10 on how harmful the product is. The EWG recommends sticking to products with low -fair hazard scores.
I’ve slowly been replacing all my old colors. My new favorite brand is Mineral Fusion which I found at Whole Foods. They have some really awesome colors, my nails lasted about 4 days before chipping and the polish goes on super smooth. It’s also free of free of formaldehyde, DBP, toluene, formaldehyde resin AND camphor.
